The town
Sant'Angelo Muxaro is a small hilltop village in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. Nestled in the rugged countryside of the Platani Valley, this lesser-known destination offers an authentic taste of rural Sicilian life, rich archaeological heritage, and scenic landscapes.
Though small in size, the village sits atop a plateau long associated with ancient cultures, including the Sicanians and Greeks. It is especially noted for its prehistoric rock-cut tombs, panoramic views, and its slow-paced atmosphere—ideal for travellers seeking a quiet, culturally rich experience off the beaten track.

Getting there
Sant'Angelo Muxaro is located in the hilly interior of the Agrigento province, about 30 km northwest of Agrigento city. The most convenient way to reach the village is by car, following the SP19 from Agrigento or the SS189 from Cammarata and turning off at Raffadali.
There is no train service, and public buses are limited. SAIS and other regional operators occasionally run routes connecting Agrigento to the surrounding towns, but schedules can be infrequent—especially on weekends—so it's best to check ahead.

MuSAM Archaeological Museum (Palazzo Arnone) (Museo Archeologico di Sant’Angelo Muxaro). Located in Piazza Umberto I inside the village’s historic Palazzo Arnone, MuSAM opened in 2015 to showcase the treasures of nearby prehistoric necropolises. Exhibits include elegant gold bowls, seal rings, ceramics and tools from stone‑cut tombs (10th–6th c. BC), along with multimedia displays tracing the myth of Kamikos and King Kokalos. Free or small local fee (may vary; check locally). Piazzetta Sant'Angelo Martire (Main square and monument in Sant'Angelo Muxaro). This small piazza sits at the heart of the village and is named after the town’s patron saint, Sant'Angelo Martire. It is a peaceful gathering place surrounded by local cafés and shops. In its centre stands a sculpted monument or shrine dedicated to the saint—often used as a reference point for events and festivities.
